Intoximeters, Inc. has developed an innovative new Computer Based Training (CBT) program to assist BAT Instructors in meeting the
Department of Transportation’s training requirements for Breath Alcohol Technicians.
The CBT program is offered on-line and provides Units I-VII of the required training in a DOT Model Course equivalent format. This
interactive training program allows the student to study the DOT rules and regulations at their own pace and is designed to replace
in-class training requirements of DOT’s Model Course. Unit VIII, EBT Proficiency, must still be accomplished in a classroom setting
where a qualified Instructor is monitoring the students in real time using their EBT device. The CBT delivers consistent and accurate
information about the DOT rules in a style that engages the trainee. Audio and visual explanations and repetition of the key points help
students learn the material, pass the Unit quizzes and the overall mastery test.
The "study at your own pace" feature of the program offers flexibility for the trainer and the trainee. It reduces the preparation
time and class time required by both parties, as well as providing a resource to allow the trainee to find answers to questions in the
future. In addition, it provides the trainer with a foolproof method of verifying that the student has actually spent the required amount
of time studying the rules & regulations. Initial BAT training requires 6 ½ hours of study on the rules & regs and refresher BAT
training requires 3 hours.
The CBT meets the requirements of the rules and regulations portion of DOT’s qualification training program for BATs (for complete
BAT training, in-person EBT proficiency training is necessary to comply with DOT training requirements).

In an effort to make refresher training as easy and cost effective as possible, Intoximeters has developed a "Train Your Own"
package to allow BATs who meet DOT’s criteria as an instructor to train other BATs. This “TYO” system is the easiest method
of providing consistent, quality training for the lowest possible cost. DOT states in
49 CFR Part 40.213 that the instructor
can be an individual who has demonstrated necessary knowledge, skills and abilities by regularly conducting DOT alcohol tests
as a BAT for at least one year or who has been through a train the trainer course.
As long as you have been regularly conducting alcohol tests with your Intoximeters' equipment for at least one year and
are thoroughly familiar with the current DOT regulations regarding alcohol testing, you may train others as BATs. However,
you must insure that BATs are trained according to the latest DOT regulations contained in 49 CFR Part 40. The best way to
obtain that information is through a factory Instructor
course, but if that is not possible, the next best thing is Intoximeters TYO package.
The Train Your Own package includes 1 CBT, 1 instrument video and an Instructor handbook. This package is designed to get the
lead person up to speed on the latest DOT regulations and information about the instrument. You would then order additional Computer
Based Training Web Keys for each person who must be trained. The TYO package was initially designed for refresher training, but can also
be used for initial BAT training.
The CBT meets the requirements of the rules and regulations portion of DOT's qualification training requirements for refresher BAT
training or initial BAT training. But remember, BATs cannot be certified unless in-person instrument proficiency training has been
accomplished. The Instructor handbook will provide resources and information about providing and documenting instrument proficiency training.
